Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia’s Aug. 1 update on coronavirus outbreak – Press Enterprise

Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia released this message on Saturday, Aug. 1, an update on the city’s status amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.

This past week, with deep sadness, I shared that my mother, Gaby O’Donnell, passed away last Sunday due to complications from COVID-19. She was 61 years old.

My mother and I were very close and my brother Jacob and I are heartbroken. Our mother was the kindest and most compassionate person we’ve ever known. She immigrated to the United States from Peru in search of the American Dream — and she found it. She and my aunt cleaned houses to make a living. She eventually got the job she really wanted and became a healthcare worker, caring for thousands of patients over her career and assisting nurses and doctors who she loved dearly. She loved to help people and lived a happy and joyous life and will always be our guiding light and the center of our lives.

Anyone who has lost a parent knows what my brother and I are going through is challenging — but the outpouring of love and support from this community has been touching and humbling. It is bringing my family comfort and I’m very grateful for that.

I want to thank the incredible team at Long Beach Memorial for taking care of our mom during her last days. They are heroes and we are forever grateful. They continue to provide heroic care for my stepfather, Jacob’s father, Greg O’Donnell, who is still in the hospital and on a ventilator. We pray and hope for a full recovery.

The healthcare teams at our local hospitals and hospitals around the country are battling the coronavirus despite the risks to their own health and they deserve our gratitude.

For four months, I have implored our community to do the right thing — to stay home except as necessary, to wear a mask, to physically distance and to frequently wash their hands. I know we can all agree that these sacrifices do not even come close to losing a parent, a child, or any loved one, to COVID-19.
